To mark the centenary of the first exhibition by the Blue Rider Group of Artists in Munich in 1911, members of Carousel produced a variety of personal responses to the single inspiration of work by the Blue Rider artists. The Munich exhibition is seen as a key event in twentieth century art, for establishing abstract art as a legitimate pursuit.
The Barbican exhibition reflects the vibrant palette used by the Blue Rider artists and their interests in other art and craft disciplines. The Carousel artists channelled this inspiration into textile works utilising techniques including fabric painting, screen printing, monoprinting, transfer printing, batik, knit, appliqué, feltmaking, embellishment and stitch.
